This week Oliver has moved on to a new favourite book. He’s been a bit tired this week so hasn’t wanted anything too upbeat and hasn’t been joining in. He picked up a bit of a cold from preschool and it seems to have really taken its toll on him.
So this week, Oliver’s book of the week is…
Goodnight Spaceman, written by Michelle Robinson and illustrated by Nick East, published by Puffin in 2016.
This is one from a range of “Goodnight…” books by the same author and illustrator duo. We also have Goodnight Santa, which isn’t just reserved for Christmas time. Apparently Oliver loves a bit of Christmas in July too! The back of the book shows you can also get stories that say goodnight to a Tractor, Digger, Princess and Pirate so there are lots of choices.
The special thing about this book is that it’s in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and has a letter inside from Tim Peake. The story itself is about two little boys who go on a bed time mission in to space. They say goodnight to everything along the way. It’s a very cute book, particularly as Tim Peake has two sons. As an adult you imagine the children going through this imaginative process and saying goodnight to their dad as they look at the sky each night. As a child it opens up a sense of curiosity about space, “why do people want to be astronauts, Mummy?”.
Another great thing about this book is that you can read it in a semi-lively tone if that’s how you want to read it. But you can also read it in a very calm, slow manner. After all, it is designed to be a bed time book. The story isn’t too long and if you have a particularly tired child they will get to hear the whole story before they drop off.
As I said previously, Oliver has been a bit under the weather. This book has been perfect for this week. He’s been listening quietly to the story, with the odd question, then rolling over to go to sleep. Perhaps he is dreaming of his own space adventure?
