I may have mentioned that we are hosting Christmas this year for 18 people! My in-laws usually host but they are doing a lot of building work at the moment so the task has fallen on us (we volunteered) as we live only a few minutes away from them. We have been helping as much as we could for the past few years so we had made a few notes, particularly as we knew it was only a matter of time before we were hosting. I hope you’ll find my top tips for hosting Christmas helpful.
- Organisation is the most important part of hosting; you need to be organised to be calm and enjoy the day, without planning everything the day could end up in pure mayhem and be more stressful than it needs to be.
- Don’t plan any particular activities – there’s nearly always talk about a walk on Christmas Day, but it never happens. There isn’t enough time and the kids are always busy playing together. If there’s a lull in the day have ideas of what you can do, including board games on standby or activities for the kids – chances are you won’t need them though with all the exciting new toys.
- Ban the TV! When everything starts to die down, get some games out, get the wine and liqueurs out, settle down and get as many people involved as possible – you could have team scrabble instead of individual players.
- Take lots of family photos – how often is the whole family together? Get the camera out and take some fun photos, you could even make it into a game with people playing out scenarios or portraying emotions. Human pyramids also make good photos, just make sure you move the furniture and any breakables!
