Thanks for hopping over from 3 Princesses and 1 Dude and welcome to my post for the First Day of Christmas of #12daysofparenting. We have many prizes to giveaway and you can enter at the bottom of this post.
For absolutely ages I have been talking about how I’m planning Christmas because we are hosting, which means I have a lot to do and as a stay-at-home-mum to a 3 year old I needed to find ways to keep Oliver entertained while I get everything done that needs doing. Cue the advent calendar! This is my way of surviving the festive period with a small one in tow.
Instead of giving Oliver a tiny chocolate every day I decided to buy a felt advent calendar with pockets in so that we could put different things in. It was his birthday on 8th December too so in that pocket we put a ‘day out’, which was sort of a birthday present but exciting nonetheless, and a day full of treats! We don’t have an elf on the shelf or anything else like that, so the advent calendar really is a little treat for him to get him excited on the run up to Christmas. It’s a great visual for him too, at age 3 he doesn’t understand how long it is until Christmas but he can see the days passing and it’s also a great activity for number recognition too. As he gets older we can adapt it in so many ways too; make clues for treasure hunts or put in little age appropriate toys and even a little chocolate if we feel like giving him a sweet treat (although he tends to have a bit of chocolate occasionally in afternoons anyway).
Of course as well as all the reasons the advent calendar is good for Oliver, it is also great for me because on days when I’m particularly busy I can include something for Oliver to keep him busy while I get on with whatever it is and if there’s something he can help me with we can include that too.
You can see my ideas for advent activities for a 3 year old here.
