I was recently sent a batch of different honey cake products from Marlenka to review*, of course I bit their hand off because I love cake and my brother-in-law’s girlfriend who is from Lithuania has made honey cakes for family gatherings before and they’re delicious!
So where do I start my Marlenka cake review? They sent me SO many products to try, I couldn’t believe it when I opened the package, such beauty before my eyes! In fact I opened one of the boxes before I managed to take a photo – oops! I just couldn’t resist the look of the little choco-honey bites. Beautiful little bites of chocolate and honey goodness; just the right size to stuff in your mouth whole if you so desire, me, I like to take my time and devour slowly (unless I’m hiding in the kitchen away from Oliver, which lets face it, is how I eat most of my chocolate).
All of the products they sent me were delicious, the cakes were moist and the flavour was beautiful. Not too much of any one component – just the perfect mix of chocolate, honey and lemon in each of the cakes. You can see their full list of products here.
One of the things I like about them is their shelf life – there is a 3 month shelf life on them so it means that you can bulk buy and have them in your little chocolate/biscuit/cake/sweet stash for whenever you might need them – perhaps if you have friends over for a cuppa or maybe if you are going to see that Grandmother whose food you don’t trust or just because you fancy a bit of cake. You would be forgiven for thinking that a long shelf life means it’s full of artificial nasties, but it’s actually free of artificial preservatives, colours or artificial flavours. The thing I didn’t like was the inclusion of palm oil in the ingredients, it’s a product I ethically despise and I’m not sure what the benefit of it is here (or anywhere). That aside, it’s all packaged really well and was in perfect condition when it arrived and could be packed away in to the cupboard hidden from little eager eyes.
Oliver’s favourites were the lemon and honey nuggets. I had put some of the nuggets out when a friend came over for a cup of tea and Oliver kept asking for more ‘yellow cake’, I actually had to take them away to stop him eating the whole lot! Being a bit of a chocolate addict I really loved the snack bar – the chocolate on the outside was perfect and the cake in the middle beautifully moist, and it went really well with a cup of tea while Oliver was napping (ssshhhh). My Grandmother-in-law really enjoyed it all, in fact we left what was leftover with her because we know she likes a bit of cake with her coffee in the afternoon. And it stopped me from eating it.
